Believing in civility, I have become a strong supporter of the Braver Angels national nonprofit organization. It was founded following the 2016 national election by a group of concerned, grassroot citizens who decided it was time to focus on depolarizing discourse in the United States. The rhetoric had grown far too toxic and destructive to a democratic republic.
The toxic rhetoric was certainly opposed to what Christians believe expressed in the Ten Commandments. The first four, of course, lay out relationship to God and the six commandments following are realizations of what makes for a livable society. “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:39)
The six included in the Ten Commandments gave recognition of the ancient realizations of prior civilizations’ formulas for workable societies. The six commandments are expressed in many religions developed throughout human history of civilization.
Today, we may look at the six as inalienable rights and justifiable guides under which a justice system can provide equal and equitable guarantees to humanity and to citizens of any group, society and country.

When rhetoric includes lies and false witness we know it harms not only individual character, but also disrespects individuals when they are expected to believe the lies.
In murder, we know the harmful effects on society and communities and the damage to individual family members of a killed individual. Lies and false witness have the same harmful effects on society and families when allowed. They are a living death with the personal effects of depression, suicide or extracting retribution thru murder.
Toxic rhetoric can excite individuals to lie, bear false witness, kill and enviously covet neighbors’ possessions. In war, add committing sexual crimes, stealing and destroying goods and dishonoring older individuals when all enemies are to be eradicated.
Incorporating all the harmful actions toward humanity in the expectations of how to serve God, the Ten Commandments give support and strength to expectations of how humanity can live in peace.
Personally pledging to focus on civility in speech, action and attitude at home, at work, in organizations and community political activities creates a happier home, meaningful life and safe community when all of God’s Ten Commandments are followed. “If you love Me, keep My commandments.” (John 14:15)
