Marchesi Frescobaldi Introduces Alìe 2022, the elegant rosé embodying sensuality and beauty

The month of February, traditionally dedicated to lovers, fittingly greets the debut of Alìe 2022, as with Alìe it will be love at first sip. Say her name, let the sea nymph of Greek mythology – icon of sensuality and beauty – beckon to you, swirl Alie in the glass, and this stylish rosé will immediately seduce you with its pure, crystalline appearance, shimmering with pale ruby highlights. An all-woman harvest crew lovingly hand-picked the clusters of Syrah and Vermentino, varieties that find their most eloquent expression in the vineyards lying next to the wine-dark sea, and that duet together in this beautifully balanced blend.

It is an equally unique terroir that yields the outstanding Alie: Marchesi Frescobaldi’s Tenuta Ammiraglia, located just a few steps from the Tyrrhenian Sea, is embraced by the gentle Maremma hills on the Toscana coast. Today, these vineyards produce superb rosés, in a modern yet uncompromisingly Mediterranean key. The vines plant their roots deep into clay-limestone soils, and enjoy the optimal exposure to intense sunlight and caressing marine breezes, conditions that allow for the estate wines’ prized structure, refined elegance, and aromatic complexity.

Rich, velvet-smooth, and with a silky finesse, Alìe 2022, with its mesmerising pink hue, offers a complex, multi-faceted bouquet layered with citrus and bergamot orange, ripe peach, pear, and apple lifted by insistent floral notes of iris, orange blossom, and peony. The long-lingering bouquet concludes on clean-edged suggestions of iodide and wild herbs alongside thyme, rosemary, and sage. A superbly crisp, tangy finish mirrors and repeats the sensory wealth encountered on nose and palate.

The 2021-2022 winter in the Maremma brought copious rains, which continued into spring and served to recharge groundwater reserves. Budbreak occurred a few days later than the norm, but warm weather ensured textbook vine growth. Higher-than-normal summer temperatures ensured ideal ripening of the Syrah and Vermentino, while aromatic precursors developed in magnificent conditions. The sun and the refreshing sea breezes made for an outstanding harvest period, the combination allowing the clusters to achieve the complex expression classic to this genuinely Mediterranean area of Tuscany.

The hand-harvested grapes were transported to the cellar as soon as possible, to preserve their quality and characteristics. The whole clusters were given an extremely delicate pressing in an oxygen-free environment, then the resultant musts were quality-selected and gravity-settled for a minimum of 12 hours; these near-obsessive procedures ensured the fascinating and distinctive characteristics of this rosé. Fermentation, at temperatures below 19°C., was in stainless steel, then the wine matured several months sur lie and aged additional months in the bottle before release.
