‘Like my interiors’: Behind the style choices of Steve Cordony

Do you have a favourite designer?
Tom Ford. His label is of the moment but it has a classic, traditional feel. A Tom Ford suit I bought five years ago will still look good in 10 years. That longevity and the element of glamour resonates. Also, I love Loewe – the colours and patterns; it’s playful and whimsical but again, quite classic.

Can you remember a favourite outfit from when you were a child?
As tragic as this is, I had these denim overalls made for a dance eisteddfod when I was 12 or 13. I remember wearing them with one strap down and a T-shirt underneath and thinking I was really cool. I obviously wasn’t.

And your worst fashion mistake?
Adidas three-stripe snap pants when I was a teenager. Kill me now, so bad.

What was your first fashion moment?
When I was 17, I went on a school trip to New York City and fell in love with shopping. It was probably American Apparel and Gap but that trip opened my eyes to fashion.

What’s your fragrance of choice?
I mix it up between Jo Malone Vetiver & Golden Vanilla cologne and Tom Ford Oud Wood.

What’s at the top of your wish list?
A seersucker suit.

Is there anything you’d never wear?
Hats. I love them but whether it’s a cap, fedora or panama, they don’t suit me.

Is there a current trend you like?
I’m into the chunky sneaker. I know it’s at the end of its run but it looks cool and it’s practical. When I was younger, I’d run around in loafers and no socks all day but now I just want to be comfy. I have a pair of chunky Dior B30s that I love.

What shoes do you wear most often?
Common Projects trainers. A white trainer updates everything – a formal trouser, for example. I also love a suede or leather loafer – Tod’s, Tom Ford and Gucci.

Who’s your favourite fashion icon?
Tom Ford, for the way his personal style extends from fashion to home and lifestyle. Also, Ralph Lauren – I love that he’s stayed true to his classic all-American ethos.

What’s your favourite off-duty, casual Sunday look?
I keep it comfortable in sweats – Venroy, Ralph Lauren or Commas – and a nice knit. Then it’s a potter in the garden and a movie – my idea of heaven.
