According to the acting vice chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), the umbrella university for colleges offering health sciences, a large majority of the students have already taken the vaccine. “Being into the health care profession, all students and staff were on priority list. Most colleges have more than 90% of their students and staff vaccinated. A large majority have even received their second dose,” said Dr Jayakar Shetty.
RGUHS has around 950 affiliated colleges and three lakh students studying in them. Exams of various courses, including Ayurveda and PG dental are currently underway.

The circular signed by N Manjunatha Prasad, member secretary of the state executive committee, has said that any violation will amount to action as per the provisions of Section 51-60 of the Disaster Management Act 2005 and Section 188 of the IPC.

The decision on reopening other colleges will be made in the next few days after discussion with the chief minister, said higher education minister C N Ashwath Narayan. 65% of the students studying in government and government-aided institutions have been vaccinated. “Considering the fact that there are many students from other states and other districts, the present progress is satisfactory. Regarding reopening of regular classes for degree classes, the decision will be taken in 3-4 days after consultations with the chief minister,” he said.
