Four make-up looks for 60s-inspired movie-star glamour

Jessica Chastain, star of George and Tammy, was pure bombshell wearing Gucci in the Pantone colour of the year, Viva Magenta, at the recent Screen Actors Guild Awards. This was paired with a 60s-inspired beehive and beautiful, rosy-toned make-up, with Chastain’s luscious crimson lips and exaggerated winged eyes the beauty heroes. Using Charlotte Tilbury, make-up artist Kristofer Buckle worked his magic starting with Magic Cream ($125) to create a creamy base. A liquid pink blush, Matte Beauty Blush in Pillow Talk ($60), gave her cheeks a peony-blurred finish. This was followed by K.I.S.S.I.N.G Lipstick in Velvet Underground ($49) and Feline Flick eyeliner ($47).

Meanwhile, White Lotus star Jennifer Coolidge channelled Brigitte Bardot with the help of celebrity hairstylist Sam McKnight. He boofed her hair using Living Proof’s Full Thickening Mousse ($48) applied directly to Tangle Teezer Wet Detangler ($28) to draw the mousse evenly through the hair before blow-drying. He created Coolidge’s sleek waves with a curling iron and locked them in with Living Proof Flex Hairspray ($45). “We added a black headband at the front of the hair for a touch of that ’60s Bardot vibe,” says McKnight. “I really wanted Jen to be the ultimate bombshell today.”

The ever-glamorous Taylor Swift arrived at this year’s Grammys wearing a midnight-blue Roberto Cavalli dress, a perfectly applied dense red lip (try M.A.C’s Retro Matte Lipstick in Ruby Woo, $34) and her trademark navy-blue smoky winged eye matched with cool-toned denim eyeshadow. Swift is a deft hand in the make-up department, according to make-up artist Jake Bailey. “I’m amazed at the speed and precision with which she does her own cat eye,” says Bailey. The matching continued right down to her starry, inky, blue nails; try O.P.I Infinite Shine Midnight Mantra Nail Polish ($24) with a dusting of Londontown Kur Diamond Shine Top Coat ($27).

Margot Robbie championed pink Chanel everything at the 80th Golden Globes in January, with her long-time make-up artist, Pati Dubroff, painting the actor’s face, eyes, cheeks and lips in varying degrees of pink to match her dress. On Robbie’s lips, Dubroff applied Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet Luminous Matte Lip Colour in Intuitive and topped it with another shade of the same lipstick, Éternelle ($65). Robbie’s hair framed her face with perfect bronde princess waves. Her hairstylist, Bryce Scarlett, explained: “I used KMS Add Power Thickening Spray ($37), as it’s amazing for creating a style that holds and moves.” Scarlett applied it using a 2½-centimetre curling iron, wrapping the hair around the barrel in four-centimetre sections and leaving the ends out for a soft finish.
