Celebrity Stylists Share Top Beauty Trends for 2023

From curly or straight locks to rock shags and an imperfect finish. Hair trends continue to evolve  — and we rounded up some of the industry’s top stylists and beauty pros to share what hair trends will be rockin’ in 2023.

Blondes are going to be more of a pearl champagne so, a bit warmer in tone versus the icy blue cool tones that have raged in popularity. Highlights are going to be more of a golden hue. And, we can’t leave out our Brondes (brown with some blonde). A balayage technique is used to blend the two shades together giving the brown a bit of a kick. Yet, it’s very natural and easy to maintain,” says Gina Rivera, Celebrity Hairstylist and Founder of Phenix Salon Suites.

“Healthy high shine color is still going strong in 2023. Warm temperature updates will be a diffused version on the lengths but quality hair and color is an absolute must,” says Min Kim, Colorist + L’Oréal Professionnel Global Ambassador.

Kim suggests protecting your investment with the Metal Detox Deep Conditioning Mask ($48) from L’Oréal Professionnel. “This mask helps neutralize metals in our hair that cause color oxidation and breakage and maintains color vibrancy plus adds nourishment,” says Kim.

The Rock Shag is the next iteration for 2023, not as dramatic nor disconnected as the Wolf Cut from 2022 but still gives incredible movement with invisible layers that can be blown out for volume or air dried for that perfectly imperfect finish.  This cut works for everyone whether they like styling or prefer a wash and go.

Celebrity Stylist Glen Coco Oropeza agrees. ”The “wolf cut” made a mark in 2022. I think moving into the next year, more and more people are less afraid of drastic chops. I think we will see a lot more ppl losing length and going for more daring haircuts. We will see more fringes, more face framing layers, we will see more bobs too!,” says Oropeza.

“Clients may combine multiple haircuts, such as merging the front of one type of haircut with the rear of another, perhaps shorter in the front and longer in the back, such as people’s own interpretations on mullets and wolf cuts. People are nearly performing their own haircuts. There is a significant trend toward mixing and matching. There will be a lot of 70s and 90s styles combined, getting the best from both eras. Thus, the shag or wolf cut may become the octopus cut, or the mullet and shag may become the shullet. The haircuts have evolved by combining the greatest aspects of each style to create a hybrid version,” says Max Stevens, Owner of The Sleep Checklist.

“Scalp care is going to be huge in 2023. There’s a new understanding that you can’t get healthy, beautiful hair unless the scalp is also healthy. So we’ll see more exfoliation and balancing products for dandruff and scalp acne, but we’ll also see general care items that help moisturize the scalp and provide nourishment so that it grows a good quality of hair. That’s not to mention how relaxing scalp masks and serums can be,” Ghanima Abdullah, a cosmetologist at therighthairstyles.com.

“In 2023, the trends will have a variety of styles such as the classic sleek style, hot crossed buns, bedazzled texture, and the big bouncy blowout. The ginger brunette color is one of the hottest shades to look out for followed by mulled wine, and snowy blonde,” says Steve Waldman, director of technical training at Hair Cuttery Family of Brands.

Brandie Devillier, platform educator at the Aveda Arts & Sciences Institute and certified color educator at Elevate Hair says this is the year of sleek styles. “In the salon, I’m seeing more and more guests wanting straight and late 90s looks. The flat iron is back and is hot! We all know heat comes with a price so prevention > repair. Protect those locks from the heat with a heat protectant! My favorite that “does is all” for sleek and heat protection is the Perfect Blow Dry spray from Aveda.”
