“Mr. Huang’s work bears clear and significant connection to the rich art history of China. His paintings are viewed within a tradition of the artist as poet, nomad, philosopher, and insightful proclaimer of the supernatural and cosmological, all interpreted through the discipline” – Richard Wearn

The Los Angeles Beverly Arts (LABA) is proud to announce that three paintings by LABA Blue-chip artist Jiannan Huang are valued at over $1.5 million each. The painting titled “Earth Code” is valued at $1.88 million, “Inextricably Linked” is valued at $1.62 million, and “The Sky of Sky” is valued at $1.54 million. Last year, these paintings were on display in Beverly Hills, California, at the LABA’s private viewing event held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on May 26th, 2021.
The appraisals were provided by fine art appraisal expert Richard Wearn, a Professor of Art at California State University, Los Angeles. He has combined his academic career with his history of working in the private art world to garner noteworthy experience and perspective to provide appraisal and valuation services. Mr. Wearn provides appraisal and consulting services to a considerable number of private and international collectors in the United States, Italy, and China. He has evaluated and appraised the works of famous art masters such as Andy Warhol, Lucio Fontana, Basquiat, Picasso, Lichtenstein, Banksy, Naim June Paik, and others.
Jiannan Huang is one of the world’s finest artists, specializing in Chinese ink and oil painting. He is ranked third on the 2020 Hurun China Art List and 19th on the Hurun Global List, with art sales of $29 million. Huang ranked second on Artron.Net’s 2020 Art Auction Market Ranking. Artron.Net is the world’s leading Chinese art website and China’s largest art service platform. In less than a year, interest from North American collectors has increased considerably. Recently two of Huang’s paintings were appraised at over one million US dollars; “Inexhaustible” valued at $1,450,000 and “The Flower of Youth” valued at $1,150,000. The appraisals were obtained from renowned art consultant Sara Mokhtari and her appraisal agency in Beverly Hills, California, in 2021.
Huang holds several positions, Director of the Chinese Traditional Culture Promotion Association, Overseas Art Adviser for the “Olympic Cheers” organizing committee for the Beijing Olympics, member of the French National Artists Committee, art consultant for the World Low Carbon Cities Alliance, and France’s Jiny City Gold Medal Honorary Citizen. He was awarded the title of “Earl” by the Indonesian Royal Family and the “Royal Sacred Knight of Constantine” from Italy. In 2020, Huang was invited by the LABA International Art Festival Organizing Committee to participate in the LABA International Art Festival as a Blue-chip artist. Last year, he was awarded an honorary membership into the Royal Society of St. George, California.
According to Wearn, “Mr. Huang’s work bears a clear and significant connection to the rich art history of China. His paintings are viewed within a tradition of the artist as poet, nomad, philosopher, and insightful proclaimer of the supernatural and cosmological, all interpreted through the discipline of his artistic vision. This centuries-old tradition is resonant within Mr. Huang’s work, placing him among an elite few whose artwork and life practice is venerated today, and their artworks sought after.”
In the 28-page appraisal report, Wearn gives a rigorous and professional evaluation of Jiannan Huang’s three artworks. In addition to the physical inspection, the appraisal methodology is primarily research and data-based, with a critical analysis of the relationships between sets of information contextualized to determine the economic conditions that define specific price indexes. Several criteria are used to evaluate and assess the paintings, including the artist’s influence on the art world, creation history, history of prices in various auction houses, trends in the art market during the past year, and market price information. The evaluation of Huang’s art was fully integrated with his influence on a global scale and compared to other major Chinese artists who are now collected in the Western world.
The growth and expansion of China’s art market has been well documented. China’s cultural economy, including the accelerated art market growth, has been part of the “Chinese Economic Miracle” since 1999. According to the statistical analysis of Morgan Stanley’s Investment Bank Report (November 2021), China’s economy has rebounded faster from the downturn of the pandemic, allowing it to surpass the United States to become the world’s largest art market. China alone (excluding Taiwan) and other Asian regions account for 21% of the total global art market sales. This acceleration is believed to be primed by an influx of capital from Chinese sources that would otherwise be spread globally.
Richard Wearn has been a Professor of Art at California State University, Los Angeles, since 2005. He has also taught at some of the most important art institutions in China, Taiwan, the United States, and Europe. His reviews on Western and Chinese contemporary art have been published many times internationally, and he has served as an art critic for many mainstream artists. An artist himself, Wearn’s artworks have been exhibited and collected worldwide.
