Author Brings Readers Into the World of the Paranormal in New Book

Shifting her focus from her academic publications, author Marsha Carow Markman has released “Crossings,” a collection of 17 short stories, each with a paranormal twist.

“’Crossings’ began years ago with scribblings on Post-it notes,” Markman said. “They were set aside while I was engulfed in a teaching career, writing for the academic marketplace, and a poetry group with university colleagues, the latter resulting in a poetry collection, ‘If We Dance…A Collection of Poems.’”

The 17 stories grew out of her favorite words: what if. These words plunged her into a world of the paranormal and all manner of phenomenon that often rests outside the domain of science and can be the object of ridicule and indifference.

“Writing the book was therapeutic for me during the pandemic and its forced isolation,” Markman said. “My muse supplied the ideas while I tapped my fingers across the computer’s keys.”

The setting of all the stories is Boston, Massachusetts, a city with a long and varied history of American experience. The first-person storytelling by the central characters aims to intimately connect each narrator with the reader in these tales of unexpected and unexplained experiences.

“’Crossings’ took me on a journey beyond what we are taught about the world in which we live,” Markman said. “I can only hope that readers will join me in that journey.”

About the author

Dr. Marsha Carow Markman earned a Ph.D. in English Education from the University of Maryland, College Park. She taught at the George Washington University and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. before returning to her California home. She is currently Professor Emerita of California University’s English Department where she directed the Writing Center, the Freshman Writing Program and taught a variety of courses, including “Writing K through 12,” “Children’s Literature,” and “The Holocaust through Literature and Film.” Three books published with Drs. Susan Corey Everson and Jonathon Boe are, “The American Journey: United States History through Letters and Diaries (Volumes 1 and 2),” “Writing Women’s Lives,” and “If We Dance…A Collection of Poems” with university colleagues. “Crossings” recently won a Bookfest award for fiction.
