Budget airline AirAsia, which is operated by Capital A, plans to launch its ride-hailing service, AirAsia Ride, in Singapore by June this year.
The announcement was made by CEO Tony Fernandes at a press conference during the AirAsia Super App rider and driver appreciation event in Kuala Lumpur yesterday (January 12).
Fernandes stated that the company is currently in the process of obtaining a license to operate in Singapore and expects to secure it by the end of this quarter.
He went on to say that AirAsia Ride will also be launching in more cities in Malaysia and that they are also looking to expand to the Philippines in the near future. The ride-hailing service is currently operating in Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia.
AirAsia Ride offers a variety of vehicles to choose from, including cars, motorcycles, and even tuk-tuks. This allows customers to choose the type of ride that best suits their needs, whether it’s a quick motorcycle ride or a more comfortable car ride.
One of the benefits of using AirAsia Ride is the ability to earn AirAsia BIG Points, the airline’s loyalty program, with every ride. These points can then be used to redeem flights, hotel stays, and other travel-related perks.
In addition to traditional ride-hailing services, AirAsia Ride also offers a “Ride Now, Pay Later” option for customers who need to book a ride but may not have the funds available at the time of booking. This feature allows customers to pay for their ride at a later date, making it more convenient and accessible to those who may have limited financial resources.
Currently, AirAsia Ride has a pool of at least 400 full-time drivers. For the Singapore market, the group is looking at a combination of flexible and full-time drivers, according to Lim Chiew Shan, regional CEO of AirAsia Ride.
He also mentioned that the company is targeting to see profit beginning this year and they expect to be the first ride-hailing company to make a profit within two years of launching.
