Vellapaniyaram with dangar chutney, kavuniarisi halwa, paal kozhukattai and so much more awaits you at the ‘Karaikudi Sandhai’ organised by the Karaikudi Nagarathar Sangam Chennai (KNSC, 2015), which has over 300 members currently. Among their various other activities, the collective focuses on inculcating an entrepreneurial spirit in women from the community living in Chennai.
Visalakshshi Ganesh, one of the coordinators for the Karaikudi Sandhai says they conducted the first edition in 2019 and are back with the second after a gap of three years. “So far, we have 90 stalls, among which 80 are by women entrepreneurs of the Nattukottai Nagarathar community. “
She continues, “Nattukottai Nagarathars, the mercantile community hailing from Sivagangai and Pudukottai districts are known for their philanthropic activities that include funding and building several Hindu temples, universities, colleges, schools, choultries, hospitals, goshalas that have been serving the society since 19th century. The products that will be sold at these stalls are products made at home, sold online. We hope to create a platform for them for networking and expanding their busineses, and meet their customers in person,” says Visalakshi.
The event will highlight Chettinad arts and crafts, textiles, accessories, toys, natural cosmetics, jewellery and farm products.
“Chettinad is well known for its handcrafted kottans (woven palm baskets), wide range of vengala pathram (bronze cookware) and textiles,” says Visalakshi. “In our tradition, we engrave images of Gods on our bronze cookware and we have an exclusive counter for that. The region is famous for silverware and jewellery as well. Chettinad-style food stalls (dry products/pickles/masalas) have a range of products to choose from, made by home chefs from the community.”
As the community is known for its financial skills there will be stalls offering financial services at the venue.
“ Inippu seeyam, paal kozhukattai, paniyaram and a good number of live counters serving such Chettinad treats will be on offer,” she says.
