Jennifer Lopez announced that she was engaged on Saturday, or rather, she hinted at “a really exciting and special story to share” to her 202 million Instagram followers and directed them to her website, JLo.com where they could view the aftermath of a proposal from her boyfriend of just under 12 months, Ben Affleck.
These star-crossed lovers, denied once before a future together back in 2004 (when Affleck called it off after he was allegedly caught with strippers) are now, back on. We didn’t have time to ask questions on the weekend – our heads were dizzy, our hearts, too full. We ask those questions now.

1. Why are they doing this?
Affleck, 49, has been married before to actress Jennifer Garner, the mother of his three kids, Violet, Sera and Sam. They split in 2015. But Lopez, bless her, has been married three times, and including Affleck’s first one, engaged six times now. Her third husband, singer Marc Anthony, is the father of her twins, Emme and Max, 16. So it’s a legitimate query – why marry at all? Maybe it’s a statement from Affleck that he’ll never do a runner again. Hey, does love even need a reason?

Well…. Lopez does love herself a wedding. The media didn’t call her Elizabeth Taylor back in the early 00s because of her diamonds. And if we could just gingerly mention again that Lopez did require a sign-up to her newsletter on her website before you could find out the news. Lopez knows the art of celebrity promotion. And if she can parlay this monumental life event into more publicity and sponsorship deals and opportunity, then that’s exactly what she’s gonna do.
2. Does anyone care?
It used to be that we needed celebrity gossip as a distraction from our own banal lives, but to quote the Prime Minister, “There’s drought. There’s floods. There’s fire. There’s pandemic. There’s now war.” So, it was not just heartening – it was a bloody relief – to see that for once, the phrase “Breaking News” did not carry underneath it information about yet another tragedy. Maybe it’s more publicity stunt than love. So what? Who cares? This and Wordle is all we have right now. We’re hanging on.
