The home
The upper floor of a huge, double-brick warehouse in Sydney’s inner west, renovated to create a comfortable, modern apartment.
Who lives here
Shelley Simpson, the founder, CEO and creative director of porcelain homewares company Mud Australia, her partner James Kirton, and their son, Spencer.
What we did
“First, we had an architect measure everything, which was a bit of a novelty,” says Simpson. The bathroom, toilet, laundry and dressing room were partitioned by walls of half height, leaving these spaces semi-open to the warehouse ceiling. In addition, the kitchen and living rooms had walls placed on wheels, so the space could morph to accommodate events and parties. “We also put solar on the roof and rainwater collection,” she adds.
My favourite room
Simpson nominates the open-plan kitchen. “It gets used by the whole team; it’s not just our kitchen,” she says. “It also functions as a community space where we’ve had lots of fun with yoga classes and team lunches.”

“Marrickville is just great!” says Simpson. “I didn’t know my neighbours when I lived in the eastern suburbs but when I landed over here, I felt like I got to know people and that there was a community. I feel very much at home here.”
Future plans
“Growing the trees, the forest!” says Simpson. “We’ve worked out how to look after the plants and they love it in this space. Adding to the greenery is something I want to do more of.”
Best advice
“Be mindful of environmental factors and make investments like solar or rainwater tanks when you first move in. Even if you’re renting, it saves you a lot of money in the long run,” says Simpson.
