Exhibitor response for the 3rd edition of the Volcanic Wine Conference is exceeding expectations, resulting in a full roster of participants for this year’s conference. Taking place from 10:30 am to 4:00 pm on June 21st at City Winery, this year’s edition will showcase the wines of over 15 unique volcanic regions with a packed room of wineries. In addition, the event will include an opening session hosted by John Szabo as well as 3 masterclass seminars scheduled throughout the day, led by viticulture, enology, and volcanology experts.
Kicking off the day at 10:30 am, John Szabo, Master Sommelier and expert on volcanic wines will lead the opening session focusing on the volcanic wine movement and the extraordinary geology behind these truly unique wines. At 11:45 am the next masterclass, “Volcanic White Wines-from Sicily to Soave to Santorini,” hosted by Yiannis Paraskevopoulos of Gai’a Winery along with Graziano Nicosia, Meri Tessari & Ron Edwards MS, showcases wines ideally suited summertime drinking. Taking an even deeper dive into the volcanic wines of Santorini is the 1:15 pm masterclass, “The South Aegean Volcanic Arc and the Genesis of Santorini’s Singular Winelands.” This seminar is presented by Geologist Dr. Christos Kanellopoulos, Winemaker/Oenology Professor Yiannis Paraskevopoulos & John Szabo MS, and sponsored by the “Santorini Volcanic Terroir” Program. Wrapping up the day closer to home is the masterclass, “Lake County Wines Are Ready to Rumble,” presented by John Szabo, MS, illustrating the proximity of one of these incredible regions here in the U.S.
The day’s seminars will coincide with the Grand Tasting, which will be ongoing from 11:30 am — 4:00 pm. With the response from exhibitors and the caliber of this year’s speakers, space in the seminars is at a premium, and early registration is recommended. Organizers, Colangelo & Partners, and John Szabo see this response from producers as a sign of ongoing interest in volcanic wines, leading to success for the International Volcanic Wine Conference as well as producers working in these extraordinary regions.
