If you choose to camp at Bethpage Camp-Resort in Urbanna, Virginia, you’ll be near not just one, but two great waterways for fishing, namely the Rappahannock River and Chesapeake Bay. Largemouth bass, pickerel and blue catfish run in the Rappahannock, which the resort sits adjacent to, as well as shad, which are an anadromous species of fish, meaning they live in saltwater but spawn in fresh water. Fish that make their home in the Chesapeake Bay, the biggest estuary in North America, include striped bass, red drum, summer flounder and spotted sea trout.
Fishing in the Florida sun on Father’s Day is not only wonderfully alliterative, but also a wonderful experience. As a peninsula, the state basically is surrounded by water on three sides but there are also plenty of inland lakes to be fished, namely Lake Okeechobee. The Big O, as it is also known, is the largest freshwater lake in Florida and is great fishing for bluegill, crappie, speckled perch, and largemouth bass. Camp at Okeechobee KOA for perfect proximity to the Big O. While it is possible to fish the lake from shore, a boat is best. If you don’t have your own, check out the fishing charters available at lakeokeechobeebassfishing.com or okeechobeejust4bass.com/just-4-bass.
In the Midwest, Neshonoc Lakeside Camping Resort is one of Wisconsin’s premier camping destinations thanks to the beauty of Neshonoc Lake, which could also be called The Little Lake That Could. Actually, it’s not so little but instead the largest inland lake in southwestern Wisconsin. The lake, which dates to the 1850s, began to die in the early 1950s due to agricultural runoff and other issues and was all but dead until local residents worked to restore the lake. Thanks to the efforts of the Lake Neshonoc Protection and Rehabilitation District, established in 1982, the lake came back and so did the walleyes, northern pike, bass, perch, and other fish making it the wonderful fishing lake it is today.
Deep in the heart of Texas (actually a bit south of the true heart and closer to Houston), the 21,000-acre Lake Conroe is a renowned fishing spot for bass. Stocked by the Texas Park and Wildlife department, largemouth, striped, hybrid stripers and white bass can all be found here. This haven for bass anglers was created in the early 1970s as a water source for the city of Houston but has become a go-to destination for serious, and not-so-serious, bass-seekers. Lake Conroe RV & Resort is a great option as it is located right on the lake and features a marina, beach, and a boat launch plus rentals for canoes, kayaks, jon boats and paddleboats so fishing, and camping, here is pretty simple.
The variety of fish that can be found in California’s Russian River is about a varied as the grapes that are grown in the Sonoma Valley, through which this 110-mile river runs. In fact, the Russian River, home to largemouth and smallmouth bass, striped bass, bluegill, catfish, steelhead trout and Chinook and Coho salmon, is the largest river in Sonoma County. With the river right onsite, Russian River RV Campground is the perfect spot to spend Father’s Day while fishing the river and making new memories.
Bottom line: Father’s Day is a great opportunity to spend time with those who are most important to you and what better way than to take a break together for a little camping and fishing? It could be the “fish tale” you share with your family and friends for years to come.
