Most Visitor travel insurance plans will not cover war and terrorism claims while a select few can offer certain benefits during events of war and terror.
Visitor travel insurance is an important part of your travel plans. While plans can cover for medical expenses for sickness and accident, many plans do not cover for medical claims or other claims arising from political unrest, war, terrorism, and natural disaster.
With the ongoing conflicts between Ukraine and Russia, people have been seeking war and terror benefits as part of their insurance coverage. Most visitor insurance plans do not offer these benefits, but a few may provide limited or specific cover for claims arising from war and terror. Visitor Guard® clarifies below the typical war and terror coverage/exclusion terms for popular visitor insurance plans
Safe Travel Comprehensive from Trawick International will not pay for any Accidental Death and Dismemberment or Paralysis loss or Injury that is caused by or that results from war or any act of war, whether declared or not, and service in the military, naval or air service of any country.
Atlas Travel Plans from WorldTrips excludes accidents or loss caused by or contributed to by terrorism, war, or act of war, whether declared or undeclared. For an Act of terrorism, you can be covered up to $50,000 lifetime maximum for eligible medical expenses only.
Patriot Plans from International Medical Group (aka IMG) shall not be liable for and will not provide coverage or benefits for any claim or charges incurred with respect to any illness, injury, death and dismemberment, or other consequence, whether directly or indirectly, proximately or remotely occasioned by, contributed to by, or traceable to or arising or incurred in connection with or as a result of war, invasion, act of foreign enemy hostilities, war-like operations (whether war be declared or not), or civil war, and mutiny, riot, strike, military or popular uprising, insurrection, rebellion, revolution, military or usurped power. However, Terrorism (not War related) can be covered up to $50,000 lifetime maximum eligible expenses, but the benefits come with specific clauses and exclusions. It is important to note that IMG is no longer issuing new business for long-term individual products and long-term group products to residents of Belarus, Russia, or Ukraine or those who list these countries as their destinations. Existing policies for residents of Belarus and Russia will not be renewed.
Liaison Travel Insurance from Seven Corner shall not cover war, hostilities, and war-like operations. However, a terrorist activity can be covered up to certain limits ($10,000 to $50,000 depending on the product). Member should have no direct or indirect involvement in the terrorist activity, or the activity is not in a country or location where the US government has issued a Level 3 Terrorism, Level 3 Civil Unrest, or any Level 4 Travel Advisory or the appropriate authorities of either your host country or your home country have issued.
Visitor Guard® has a special mention for High Limit Accident and International Major Medical Plan from Petersen Underwriters. Both plans can pay for expenses medical treatment and Accidental Death incurred from injuries and/or illnesses sustained due to war or terrorism. There is no coverage for war/terrorism when it involves the use or release of any nuclear weapon or device or chemical or biological agent.
Visitor Guard® would like to highlight the Diplomat plans for providing good war risk coverage outside the US when the war risk rider is purchased. When the War Risk Rider has been purchased, it can cover accidents that occur within the geographical limits or territorial waters of, or airspace above the geographic limits or territorial waters of a designated war risk territory.
In a very unpredictable world with war or war-like situation in Ukraine, Russia and their neighboring countries travel can be risky especially to Europe. When travel is inevitable or necessary for the intrepid then it is prudent to seek out a visitor insurance plan that can provide coverage for war and terrorism. Pallavi Sadekar at Visitor Guard® concluded that “there are special visitor travel insurance solutions with war and terror coverage, and it encourages due diligence and suggests travelers to be prepared to budget a little more than the typical for these special plans.”
