Before Peter Safran and James Gunn took over the DCEU, there was only one man at the helm trying to spearhead this universe into fame, Zack Snyder. However, Snyder had to leave the franchise in the middle of making his third instalment to the series due to personal reasons. Now, seven years after the release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Snyder has finally spoken about how the audience reacted to the movie.
Snyder appeared at a Full Circle event hosted by Vero, where he not only spoke about his upcoming project, but his past work with the DCEU too. Snyder felt that fans left disappointed from the movie as they had certain expectations in mind while going in, which weren’t needed. He also stated that the movie was not made how every average superhero movie was being made those days.
Snyder was asked if he had “created so many layers for the storytelling in the characters” that he had to make an effort to dig a little deeper. To which Snyder agreed, but added that he felt that was also one of the reasons that the movie became so polarising. Moreover, he stated that he thinks this way, but could be wrong, but he felt a lot of people went to the movie thinking “Oh, it’s the superhero romp, right? Let’s have fun with it.”
However, that is not what audiences ended up receiving. Instead, they got a “sort of hardcore deconstructivist, heavily layered, experiential modern mythological superhero movie that needs… that you really need to pay attention to.” He feels that this was not something that the fans found cool and thought it to be exhausting.
