Yogi intervenes as Maurya, Akhilesh get personal while discussing work in house

The second day of the budget session in UP legislative assembly saw a remark by deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya evoke an angry retort from SP chief and leader of opposition Akhilesh Yadav, compelling chief minister Yogi Adityanath to intervene.

Yadav spoke at length for about an hour in the assembly, where he highlighted, among other things, that the Purvanchal Expressway and Kanpur Metro was initiated under his government but the BJP took credit for it. He also attacked the government for the electricity shortage, saying it had not set up any additional power plant, as well as for public health facilities in the state which he said remained unimproved in the past five years of the BJP government.

Maurya said in his address that Yadav should “rid himself of the ailment” under which he labels every scheme or project as one started by the SP government, after staying out of power for five years and now five more. He said Yadav highlights work done in the areas of roads, expressways and metros as if he “sold his Saifai land to build them”. Saifai, in Etawah, is the Yadavs’ hometown.

Yadav then rose angrily and said, “Tum apne pitaji se paise laate ho banane ke liye (You ask for money from your father to build these projects)? This led to an uproar in the house.

CM Adityanath then came to Maurya’s defence and condemned Yadav’s act.
