Microsoft’s Xbox Series consoles might soon be getting new storage options in expansion cards from Western Digital.
The leak stems from a new 1 TB Western Digital expansion card, spotted at Best Buy (via The Verge). The listing confirms that the upcoming storage expansion will cost $179.99 The listing has since been taken down.
If the news about the new Western Digital expansion card is true, then this option will reportedly cost much less than current options. Currently, Seagate offers a 1 TB expansion card at $219.99, which is $40 more than that of the Western Digital option.
The new model called the Western Digital C50 expansion card will pave the way for lowered prices for expandable storage options. So far, Seagate has been the only company to offer expansion cards for the Xbox series consoles, and the American-based giants have remained rather stubborn with no price reductions taking place for its 512 GB and 1 TB options.
Microsoft has taken a novel approach to expandable storage options for the current generation Xbox consoles. The Xbox Series X|S consoles feature a proprietary storage system, and the Microsoft-owned brand has worked with Seagate and now Western Digital for expansion card options.
Compare that with the PlayStation 5, and the Sony-developed console supports M.2 SSDs. This has allowed players on the blue side to have a variety of expansion storage options, with many of them priced much lower than the cards offered for Xbox by Seagate and Western Digital.
