Wrestlers Ravi, Deepak’s Tokyo preparations affected due to visa issues | More sports News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: India’s Tokyo-bound wrestlers Ravi Dahiya (57kg) and Deepak Punia (86kg) have been spending anxious moments in Warsaw, waiting for their visas to arrive so that they can travel to Russia and start preparing for the Olympics alongside compatriot Bajrang Punia (65kg), who has been training in the foothills of Vladikavkaz since the first week of this month.
It’s been 10 days since the Polish Open Ranking Series tournament (June 8-13) concluded in Warsaw and the freestyle wrestlers’ training for Tokyo has not started in earnest due to the non-availability of quality sparring partners.
“We are in the process of securing their visas for Russia but there hasn’t been any confirmation so far. We hope to resolve this issue soon. We have been communicating with the Indian embassy in Poland (Warsaw) on a regular basis to grant them visas (for Russia) at the earliest,” WFI’s assistant secretary Vinod Tomar told TOI.
Ravi’s foreign coach Kamal Malikov and Deepak’s coach Murad Gaidarov communicated with Bajrang’s coaching team, which told them that the national training centre in Vladikavkaz was hosting some of the finest Tokyo-bound Olympics and world wrestling champions and that it would be great if the two can come over and train alongside Bajrang.
Ravi and Deepak promptly placed the relocation request with the WFI. But it’s been 10 days and the WFI is yet to hear from the embassy in Warsaw, leaving the two grapplers hassled. The federation is facing another problem with respect to their Covid-19 vaccination. “Both Ravi and Deepak have received their first shot of Covishield and are due for the final dose. We don’t know whether AstraZeneca vaccine is available in Russia or not. If that’s the case, then they might have to return to India to get their second dose of Covishield,” a WFI official added.
