With BSP looking weak, BJP reaches out to Jatavs

In the upcoming UP assembly elections, the BJP has set a target of securing more than 50% of the Jatav votes. Jatavs constitute 10% of UP’s population and are considered to be the core voters of Mayawati-led BSP.

BJP leaders feel that with the BSP weakening and losing ground support, the Jatav votes are up for grabs.

The party has deployed former Uttarakhand governor Baby Rani Maurya as the Jatav face in the state. On October 19, when Maurya was to attend a BJP SC Morcha workers’ programme in Meerut, the tag ‘Jatav’ was added to her name on the banners on stage, to identify the caste. Since then, she has conducted meetings in six regions of the state and is currently visiting every district of UP.

“I am not saying we will get 100%, but we will get 40%-50% (Jatav) votes for sure,” Maurya told ET. “For the past 10 years, the people of my community have been looking for a leadership and a party that can make them feel empowered. I am going to them and passing on the message of Narendra Modi and Yogi Adityanath.”

Apart from conducting caste-based meetings, BJP leaders are also involved in influencing the Jatavs at the booth level. “They are not getting anything in the BSP and by nature they can’t go with the Samajwadi Party,” Devendra Singh Chaudhary, state prabhari of BJP SC Morcha told ET. At the booths, the leaders identify Jatav leaders and talk to them in person to convince them about the BJP.
