Season 3 of The Witcher series is coming to Netflix next month and will mark the last time fans get to see Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, though it could’ve been the end of the show altogther.
Speaking to Total Film Magazine, series showrunner Lauren Hissrich discussed how the show will move on without Cavill, saying that it was an option to cancel it completely or remove Geralt as the protagonist.
“It was time for him in his life to move on,” Hissrich said, who admitted Cavill’s departure was tough news to take. “I think we’ve all been mourning this in our own way.”
The actor announced he was stepping away from the show last year when Netflix revealed that the series had been renewed for a fourth season. In his stead, Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth will take on the role of Geralt in Season 4.
“I mean, we had the choice to have Geralt exit and to end the show,” she said. “[But] that’s not something that we were willing to do. There’s just too many stories left to tell. If we replaced Geralt with another Witcher, we would be going fully away from the books, and I don’t think that’s what anyone wanted either.”
Cavill’s performance as the White Wolf was beloved by many fans, as his nerdy adoration for the source material made the actor a perfect fit. Hissrich, though, is still fully confident that the future of the show is in safe hands.
“We’re all excited about Liam coming in,” she said. “He’s got enormous shoes to fill, but also has a lot of energy and a lot of excitement for it. It’s obviously a brand-new chapter for us. And there’s a lot of feelings involved. But at the end of the day, we love what we’re doing. So we’re gonna keep going.”
The Witcher universe is wildly expansive these days, featuring an RPG series, a card game, manga, and even a cook book. However, the Netflix series brings the story back to basics by following Andrzej Sapkowski’s original book series.
