Ashleigh Barty will open proceedings on Tuesday, knowing she’s doing someone else’s job. The World No.1 seeks to make Centre Court her stage, even if for one afternoon, where her story will be told and her style will hold sway.
With title-holder Simona Halep forced out with a calf injury, Barty, of the soft hands and easy manner, will play the part. The 24-year-old — who has been handed an inspirational opponent in Carlos Suarez Navarro, cancer survivor and compelling shot-maker — will also be dressed for the role.
The top seed’s on-court style will channel her idol, the irrepressible Evonne Goolagong Cawley, who won Wimbledon 50 years ago. The specially designed two-piece ensemble, echoes Goolagong’s scallop dress. Barty’s racerback tank is paired with a skirt embellished with laser-cut flowers. A garden, a giant, a goal.
“It’s a special (50th) anniversary for a lot of Australians, but for indigenous Australians in particular this is a special one,” Barty said of Goolagong’s 1971 triumph. “Her favorite dress inspired me and our generation of indigenous youth. I wanted to make sure Evonne was okay with it before we started creating my version of her iconic dress.”
“Evonne created a path for all of us as Australians, and for our heritage,” the Wimbledon top-seed said. “She created a legacy like no other in Australia. I’m exceptionally proud to be able to call her a friend and mentor, to be able to share heritage.”
Barty, the 2019 Roland Garros champion, retired from the clay court Slam with a left hip injury three weeks ago. A couple of days before the start of the French Open, she came down hard when trying to land a serve. Barty was then forced to retire from her second-round match. The top-seed said she had prepared the best she could for the grass-court major, starting Monday.
“I feel like I’m fit, I’m ready to play,” said Barty, who likes to own the court, using it like it were her drawing room. “Wimbledon is something that excited me and drove me to do everything I possibly could to make sure I was fit and playing.” The Aussie, whose only junior Grand Slam title came at Wimbledon nine summers ago, has never been past the fourth-round in the women’s competition.
“I love playing on grass. I love the challenge that comes with playing on grass,” said Barty, an attractive all-court player.
