Will support all sincere initiatives for peaceful resolution of Kashmir issue: Hurriyat

The Hurriyat Conference on Saturday informed that the conglomerate’s chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq completed 30 months under house arrest, reiterating that the Hurriyat was willing to support any sincere initiative for peaceful resolution of the Kashmir issue.

The Hurriyat leadership said that the Government of India should immediately release Mirwaiz and all other political leaders, activists and youth from house detentions and jails, unconditionally and without further.

“They (GoI) should initiate the process of peaceful resolution of the Kashmir conflict. Hurriyat as in the past will give all out support to every such sincere initiative,” read the statement.

The Hurriyat Conference in a statement issued here said that Mirwaiz was put under arbitrary house arrest on August 5, 2019, when special status of J&K was abrogated and the state was downgraded into the two Union Territories of J&K and Ladakh.

“Hurriyat strongly condemns the forcible and arbitrary house detention of its chairman by the authorities, whereby all his human rights stand completely violated,” read the statement issued here.

The Hurriyat reiterated that the conglomerate believes in peaceful resolution of the globally acknowledged Kashmir issue as per the will of its people. “This is what Hurriyat came into existence for and it is no crime. Both India and Pakistan themselves reiterate that the conflict has to be resolved. It’s tragic that it is being lingered,” Hurriyat said.

The Hurriyat leadership said that resolution of the issue is also a guarantee of peace in this highly volatile region where mistrust between the two neighbours works to the advantage of power players. “It can ignite a nuclear conflict any time. We will continue to strive for a peaceful resolution of the Kashmir issue,” it said.

Meanwhile Hurriyat also condemned the arrest of a Kashmir based journalist Fahad Shah, who was summoned and later arrested by the police in Pulwama district of southern Kashmir. “Hurriyat strongly rejects and regrets the policy of use of force and intimidation by the authorities to silence voices that report facts and are critical of those in power by clubbing them as ‘anti-national’,” read the statement. They urged the authorities to reconsider this ‘authoritarian approach’ and release Shah and all other journalists languishing in jails for doing their duty.
