Will Genshin Impact Get Censored Outside China?

Right after the server maintenance for Genshin Impact 2.4 started, miHoYo announced on January 5, 2022, new outfits for several Genshin Impact female characters.

Genshin Impact will soon add new alternate outfits for Jean, Amber, Rosaria, and Mona. These outfits will not replace the currently existing default outfits. However, things are different in China.

Was Genshin Impact censored in China?

Rather than censorship, this is more like self-regulation. miHoYo itself took this decision though it wasn’t without some kind of outside pressure. As we explained in September, several Chinese game companies studied a plan to self-regulate themselves with guidelines. Changing the content of their games in China.

Are these the new default outfits for Jean, Amber, Rosaria, and Mona?

Both the Genshin Impact English and Japanese Twitter shared an announcement explaining these are only alternate outfits. These won’t replace the default outfits in-game.

The Chinese announcement for the outfits however is different. The announcement, translated by our Japanese peers at Automaton, explained that the Chinese servers starting Genshin Impact Version 2.5 will change the base outfits of these four characters.

In other words, it’s very likely that these will be the new default outfits for these four characters on Chinese servers. These outfits are still in-development and could look different at release too.

miHoYo will adjust certain character depictions and certain cutscenes as well. miHoYo also apologized to the Chinese player base and distributed 1200 Primogems to each player as compensation.

The alternate outfits for Jean and Rosaria most notably cover more cleavage and skin. While Mona lost her leotard-like outfit. Though Mona now has a Zettai Ryouiki, which will please those with deep otaku culture.

Will miHoYo censor Genshin Impact outside China too?

It’s unlikely this will happen, as miHoYo created a new company outside China, Cognosphere. And made it the new distributor of Genshin Impact. This is also why miHoYo asked players to accept the Privacy Policy again after the Version 2.4 maintenance. All the documents feature the name Cognosphere now.

Did miHoYo censor Shenhe’s artwork?

Our peers at Automaton also pointed out how the initial reveal artwork for Shenhe showed her navel through her clothes. But the final artwork does not. It’s likely miHoYo decided to self-regulate the artwork as well.

We’ve also reached out to miHoYo for comments on the matter. We’ll be sure to share their answer when we hear back.
