The rumours of Apple transitioning to OLED display for iPad have been around for quite some time now. Apple has reportedly begun the final production for prototypes of iPads with an OLED display and these iPads, according to a recent report from ETNews. However, as per the report, Apple fans need to wait for over a year for these iPads as they may likely launch in 2024.
The report adds that the upcoming iPads with OLED would focus on delivering unmatched picture quality and being lightweight. For this, Apple would be adopting the dry etching process for the OLEDs used in the iPads.
iPad’s OLED panel to be thinner and lighter
In the dry etching process, the unnecessary parts are removed while making the TFT circuit patterns using chemical technology, reducing the overall weight of the display panel. Apple is also reportedly working on a special coating to strengthen the thin panel derived from the dry etching.
Samsung and LG to make panels for the upcoming OLED iPad
Samsung and LG are said to produce the OLED panels for iPads coming in 2024. The two companies are reported to have invested in several small and mid-sized facilities to fulfil the requirement for the upcoming iPad. It is believed that the OLED industry may benefit heavily from the iPad’s adoption of OLED displays.
Earlier this year, The Elec reported that Samsung had already begun the development of the two-stack tandem OLED panels to win an order from Apple. Samsung’s OLED panel is said to offer double the brightness and quadrupled lifespan compared to traditional OLED panels.
