Meta-owned instant messaging platform WhatsApp has revealed that it has published its user safety report for the month of March in 2022. The user safety report, in accordance with the IT Rules 2021, contains details of the user complaints received and the corresponding action taken by WhatsApp, as well as WhatsApp’s own preventive actions to combat abuse on the platform. “As captured in the latest monthly report, WhatsApp banned over 1.8 million accounts in the month of March, a WhatsApp spokesperson confirmed to The Times of India-Gadgets Now. These accounts were banned between March 1, 2022 to March 31, 2022.
“Over the years, we have consistently invested in Artificial Intelligence and other state-of-the-art technology, data scientists and experts, and in processes, in order to keep our users safe on our platform,” further added the spokesperson.
The reports detail user complaints received and the corresponding action taken by WhatsApp, as well as WhatsApp’s own preventive actions to combat abuse on the platform.
Since it is an end-to-end encrypted platform, WhatsApp has no direct visibility into the content of personal messages sent on the platform. It relies on behavioural signals from accounts and available unencrypted information including user reports, profile photos, group photos and descriptions. “We deploy a combination of security measures and processes to help keep our users safe. We apply spam detection technology to spot and take action on accounts engaging in abnormal behaviour to stop spam,” says WhatsApp on its support page.
WhatsApp further notes that in addition to safety features and controls, it employs a team of engineers, data scientists, analysts, researchers, and experts in law enforcement, online safety, and technology developments to oversee these efforts. Users are enabled to block contacts and to report problematic content and contacts to WhatsApp from inside the app. “We pay close attention to user feedback and engage with specialists in stemming misinformation, promoting cybersecurity, and preserving election integrity,” WhatsApp further adds on the support page.
