From a daily average of 35,000 plus doses in the first week of June, the number went up to 39,000 plus doses in the second week and further to 55,000 dose in the third week. Till June 7, around 70 lakh second doses were due in the state and the number has come down to around 67 lakh.
“The biggest challenge is to mobilise people who have stayed away from taking the second dose. If there was no bar on government CVCs to offer the precaution dose to all adults, we could have seen more vaccinations,” said a health official.
Government CVCs can offer the booster jab only to senior citizens, healthcare and frontline workers. Private CVCs that were seeing a poor turnout even till the first week of June are now seeing an impressive escalation.
“The footfall in our CVC was just around 30 to 40 on weekdays and about 100 a day on weekends. This has now gone up to around 90 on weekdays and 200 on weekends,” said R Venkatesh, regional director (east) of Narayana Health.
The spike in Covid cases began from the second week of June. From two digits, the numbers climbed up to three digits on June 10 for the first time after four months. Even the positivity rate is on the verge of reaching 5% from 0.5% on June 1.
“Even a fortnight ago, we would have only about 20 to 40 recipients turning out to take the booster jab. Now it has gone up to about 200 a day on weekdays and 270 on weekends. This could be due to the rising Covid graph,” said Sudipta Mitra, CEO of Peerless Hospital.
“We are seeing a sharp increase of about 40% from the second week of June and most people are coming for the precaution dose,” said Rupali Basu, managing director and CEO of Woodlands Multispeciality Hospital.
Currently, the booster jab for 18-59 years is available only at private CVCs where recipients have to pay Rs 386 for a dose. During the door-to-door campaign, the health workers are mobilising second dose dropouts and those who are eligible for the booster dose to take their shots at the earliest.
