Wednesday Season 2 Will Lean More Into Horror

Jenna Ortega has discussed plans for Netflix’s Wednesday, saying that Season 2 will ditch romantic storylines in favor of heightening the horrors that the show has to offer.

Ortega, who now has a producing role on Wednesday, spoke about her priorities for the next season during a conversation with Elle Fanning for Variety’s Actors on Actors. She explained that the next chapter would tap its horror elements more to become creepier and kookier.

“We’ve decided we want to lean into the horror aspect of the show a little bit more,” Ortega revealed, per Variety. “Because it is so lighthearted, and a show like this with vampires and werewolves and superpowers, you don’t want to take yourself too seriously.”

The first season of the smash hit Netflix series saw Wednesday entangled in a love triangle with Tyler Galpin (Hunter Doohan) and Xavier Thorpe (Percy Hynes White), but Ortega was not a fan of that subplot and previously said it “made no sense” for her character.

“We’re ditching any romantic love interest for Wednesday, which is really great,” she added. “We’re going to get bolder, more dark.”

Ortega talked about the collaborative process behind the first season, explaining how she would convene with director Tim Burton and the writing team to figure out what works for the Wednesday Addams character and how that was important from the get-go for Season 2.

“We wanted to get ahead of the curve and make sure that we could start the conversations earlier,” she said. “And I’m just so curious. I want to see the outfits, new characters that are coming in, scripts, and they were gracious enough to let me put the producer hat on.”

Wednesday was hugely successful for Netflix and rapidly became one of the streamer’s most-watched shows ever.

IGN praised Wednesday’s inaugural season for introducing “a whole new generation to the Addams family with creepy and kooky hijinks and an incredible performance from Jenna Ortega,” though we also noted that “some tertiary characters struggle from weak writing.”
