Vivo laptops are reportedly in the works. According to a report in Gizchina quoting 91Mobiles, the BBK-owned company Vivo is getting ready to enter the laptop market. The news of Vivo laptops follow reports of Realme entering the laptop market with its budget laptop. Earlier this month, Xiaomi sub-brand Redmi made its debut in the laptop market.
As per the report, Vivo is conducting a survey for a laptops. The company is asking consumers what they would like to see in the laptop in the terms of the laptop’s price, display size and processor. Though no details are available about the laptop, it is speculated to come in two screen sizes. The Vivo laptop is likely to be powered by 11th-gen Intel Core i5 or i3 processors. It is also a possibility that similar to the recently-launched Redmi laptops, Vivo laptops too may come in two variants, one running on 11th-gen Intel Cor i5 and other Core i3 processor.
The laptop market in India has seen several new entrants in the past one year, these include Xiaomi, Redmi and Nokia. LG recently re-entered the market with its Gram series laptops. While Xiaomi, Redmi and Nokia offer affodable devices; LG Gram series is premium with prices starting at Rs 70,000-plus. The speculated specifications suggest that Vivo laptops will be budget devices. This means they will compete against Xiaomi, Redmi and the upcoming laptops from Realme.
What is driving global laptop market
The Pandemic has resulted in a huge growth in the laptop market. The sales of laptops reached a ten-year high in the year 2020, as per Gartner. Worldwide PC shipments (which includes both desktops and laptops) totaled reached 275 million units in 2020, a 4.8% increase from 2019 and the highest growth in ten years. “Robust consumer PC demand again drove sales, particularly in regions where governments maintain stay-at-home orders as the Covid-19 pandemic persists. Prior to 2020, consumers had been shifting to a phone-first focus, yet the pandemic reversed this trend. PCs have resurfaced as an essential device as consumers, including younger children, are relying on them to for work, school, socializing and be entertained from their homes,” said Mikako Kitagawa, research director at Gartner.
Coming to more recent numbers, worldwide PC shipments totaled 71.6 million units in the second quarter of 2021, an increase of 4.6% from the second quarter of 2020, according to preliminary results by Gartner. While PC demand remained above pre-pandemic levels, this was a marked deceleration in growth compared to the record year over year growth of 35.7% in the first quarter of 2021, due in part to the impact of ongoing component shortages.
While Gartner does not include Chromebooks in its traditional PC market results, Chromebook shipments were once again strong in the second quarter of 2021. The total combined worldwide PC/Chromebook market grew over 10% year over year.
