Vijay Hazare Trophy: Centurion Faiz Fazal makes it count in big match, guides Vidarbha to pre quarter-final | Cricket News – Times of India

NAGPUR: Even after Aditya Sarwate hit a six to seal the deal for Vidarbha against Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, Vidarbha had their eyes on two matches being played in Mumbai. Fortunes fluctuated as they waited with bated breath hoping for Gujarat to lose and Himachal to win keeping the net run rate in Vidarbha’s favour.
It was that sort of day for centurion Faiz Fazal’s side. As the sun went down, Vidarbha’s changes brightened. Ultimately, with both results going in their favour, Vidarbha squeezed into the prequarterfinal of Vijay Hazare Trophy. They will face Tripura in pre-quarter finals in Jaipur on Sunday.
Before luck played its part, it was Faiz who brewed a five-wicket victory for his men in the company of Apoorv Wankhade under enormous pressure at MCA’s Bandra Kurla Complex ground, Mumbai.
Chasing 234, the skipper was witness to the departure of four batsmen in the first 75 minutes of the must-win encounter. In reply to J&K’s 233, Vidarbha scored 236 for 5 in 43 overs.
The southpaw Faiz (102 n.o; 110b, 12×4) once again showed why he is rated so highly in the circuit. When the chips were down and the skipper had company of new-man Wankhade (79; 80b, 8×4, 2×6), who was playing his first one-dayer this season, Faiz focussed on keeping the scoreboard ticking.
The 36-year-old, who made his first-class debut against J&K with a ton in 2003, brought all his experience into play and kept collecting runs from his end to ensure Wankhade doesn’t feel the pressure of scoring. Faiz, who dealt with off-spinner Parzez Rasool with supreme footwork, led from the front till his partner got his eyes in.
Once Wankhade started seeing the ball well, the left-right combination whipped J&K attack with some solid blows. What caught the attention during the Faiz-Wankhade’s 149-run stand off 150 balls was the skipper’s command over stealing singles no matter who was bowling.
Faiz’s approach not only kept J&K on the backfoot, but also gave Wankhade the license to play freely. Wankhade, known for his big hits, unravelled two big sixes and smashed eight boundaries.
From the other end, the Indian opener elegantly pierced gaps on 12 occasions to collect 48 runs from those crisps shots to the fence.
Earlier, Vidarbha rode on pace Yash Thakur (9.3-0-58-3), spinner Aditya Sarwate (10-2-36-3) and offie Akshay Wakhare (10-0-23-1) to restrict J&K to 233.
Elsewhere in Mumbai, Odisha, who were the table topper till yesterday, lost the match and leader’s spot to Himachal. With this win, Himachal have directly qualified for the quarterfinals. On the other hand, Gujarat’s defeat to Andhra worked in Vidarbha’s favour.
BRIEF SCORES
J&K 233 all out in 49.3 overs (Fazil Rashid 73, Parvez Rasool 50; Yash Thakur 3-58, Aditya Sarwate 3-36, Akshay Wakhare 1-23) lost to Vidarbha 236 for 5 in 43 overs (Faiz Fazal 102 n.o, Apoorv Wankhade 79; Ram Dayal 2-40) by 5 wickets.
