Veteran singer-composer Bappi Lahiri died in a Mumbai hospital, reported news agency PTI. The news of his death was confirmed by hospital doctor.
Fondly known as Bappi da, he was as much known for his hit numbers as he was for his fascination for gold. Bappi Lahiri has composed songs for movies such as Disco Dancer, Himmatwala, Sharaabi, Adventures of Tarzan, Dance Dance, Satyamev Jayate, Commando, Aaj Ke Shahenshah, Thanedaar, Numbri Aadmi, Shola Aur Shabnam, among others. The singer-composer’s first big Bollywood hit score was Aamir Khan’s father Tahir Hussain’s Zakhmee.
He last composed the song Bhankas was for the 2020 movie Baaghi 3.
Last year, the musician was admitted to Breach Candy hospital in Mumbai after being diagnosed with Covid-19.
In a 2009 interview with Hindustan Times in an interview in 2009, “Even in Hollywood, everyone knows me. I have offers from Whitney Houston, and Jackson Five. All this happened because Bappi Lahiri’s Disco Dancer was a phenomenal hit. And (sings) Jimmy, jimmy, aaja, aaja, was sung by the famous singer M.I.A., who has been nominated for Oscar.”
