Varsities, colleges gear up to welcome students again – Times of India

BHUBANESWAR: A day after the state government decided to reopen universities and degree colleges for resuming offline classes from Monday, authorities of the higher educational institutions in the state are all geared up to welcome their students again.

The higher education department on Friday directed the principals of degree colleges and vice-chancellors of state public universities to reopen hostels from Sunday onwards. Several of the students will come to their respective hostels on Sunday before commencement of offline classes from Monday.

As institutions will reopen after around one month, cleaning and sanitization of classrooms, hostels, toilets and other utilities will be conducted. The degree colleges and universities were closed since January 10 due to an increase in Covid-19 cases in the third wave of the pandemic.
Aparajita Chowdhury, vice-chancellor of Rama Devi Women’s University, said they are all geared up to start offline classes for the students. “We will hold tutorial classes for the students who have doubts over some chapters of their courses. A counselling will be held for the students to make them offline examinations ready,” she added.

Sanjay Kumar Satapathy, vice-chancellor of Kalahandi University Bhawanipatna, said they are prepared to welcome the students on Monday. “We will complete the cleaning and sanitization work by Sunday. We will hold doubt clearing classes for Plus II students and undergraduate (UG) final year students who will appear for the offline examination very soon,” he added.

He said left out theory and practical classes of science students will be conducted. Due to closure of degree colleges and university, practical classes could not be held according to the schedule.

Similarly, other institutions including Utkal University, FM University Balasore, Berhampur University and Sambalpur University were prepared to resume offline classes from Monday. Most of the institutions will focus on holding practical/laboratory classes as soon as possible. After holding some offline classes for each subject, the respective institutions will hold examinations.

The higher education institutions will follow the existing standard operating procedure (SOP) while holding offline classes and academic activities. Wearing a face mask or face cover will be mandatory. The institutions should ensure frequent handwashing or hand sanitization in its premises. Social distancing will be adopted in classrooms, libraries and laboratories. These institutions should encourage self-monitoring of health.

The department has also asked its educational institutes to conduct all the examinations via offline mode only by following Covid-19 guidelines.
