Welcoming the decision, PC Joshi, vice chancellor, University of Delhi (DU) says that UGC’s initiative will help address candidates’ plight. “The portal will work as a one-stop destination to disseminate the vacancy related information and minimise candidates’ dependency on various other sources including local newspapers, employment newspaper etc to stay updated about the jobs available,” says Joshi.
However, given the restricted access due to the digital divide, UGC has advised employers to mandatorily publicise job vacancies through other means such as newspaper advertisements, etc to inform those having limited internet access.
On DU’s plan to post vacancies on the portal, Joshi says that the administration will put up job posting on the newly launched website as soon it is required.
UGC not committed to recruitment
Higher education institutions in India are facing an acute shortage of faculty. Citing the example of his department, T Yadagiri Rao, chairperson, Board of Studies, Department of Public Administration & HRM, Kakatiya University, Warangal, Telangana, says there are only two people including him working against the sanctioned strength of 23.
“Instead of creating a website to facilitate communication between job seekers and employers, it would have been better if the Commission had initiated action against state and central universities for not filling up the vacant positions,” says Rao.
“UGC being the highest authority for higher education in the country should do something concrete to address the shortage of faculties at universities across India,” says Rao.
Effort to generate real data
Shitanshu Bharti, a guest faculty at DU is of the view that the UGC’s job portal seems to be a breather for candidates like her. “The initiative taken by the UGC is a welcome step. However, the efficacy of the job portal will be decided over time,” she says.
This is a step taken by the Commission to generate the data of candidates engaged in academics. It seems to be beneficial for the government, but how candidates are going to be benefited by it remains the larger question,” says Shitanshu, who is hopeful that the portal will help find employment to those who are still struggling despite holding the NET, NETJRF and PhD degree.
