CHANDIGARH: Rising all-rounder Raj Angad Bawa’s exploits in the Under-19 World Cup final is most likely to be rewarded with a spot in the Chandigarh squad for the upcoming Ranji Trophy tournament.
Sources in the UT Cricket Association have confirmed to TOI, that the teenage sensation’s selection was based on his performance in the World Cup. Raj was on fire in the final against the England colts, returning with a five-wicket haul and scoring 35 runs, to be adjudged the Man-of-the-match in Antigua on Saturday. His tally of 5 for 31 against England was the best bowling performance ever in an U-19 World Cup final.
The UTCA on Monday, released a statement citing that president Sanjay Tandon has got the consent from BCCI secretary Jay Shah that allowed Under-19 boys to play in the Ranji Trophy.
“Taking cognizance of Tandon’s proposal last Saturday, Jay Shah took this as a positive step towards adding more enthusiasm to the country’s oldest and most prestigious tournament. This first of its kind initiative by Tandon will benefit all 39 cricket boards and associations in the country, under which the youngsters will be able to represent in the Ranji Trophy,” read the UTCA statement.
Raj’s inclusion in the team will boost the Chandigarh middle order that has often been found wanting for runs in the longest format, while his medium pacers will add variety to the bowling attack. The young gun accumulated 252 runs and picked 9 wickets in the U-19 World Cup.
He bagged a four-wicket haul against South Africa in the first match and followed it with a handsome 42 against Ireland. With his 108-ball unbeaten 162 – including 14 fours and eight sixes – against Uganda, he eclipsed Shikhar Dhawan’s 155 against Scotland in 2004 to register the highest score by an Indian at an U-19 World Cup.
With the first phase of the Ranji Trophy starting February 10, and very less time left for training, all eyes will be on how the youngster translates his white-ball form in the four-day format.
