Tokyo Olympics: ‘Desi’ food keeps positivity flowing! | Tokyo Olympics News – Times of India

Chole bhature, tomato paneer, butter naan, bhindi on the menu for Indian athletes at village
NEW DELHI: Remember table tennis player Achanta Sharath Kamal’s bitter twitter post from the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games, in which the four-time Olympian had complained about the lack of Indian food at the Athletes Village? “After a gruelling 3-hour long match, this is what we get to eat for dinner at the #AsianGames2018. Bread, nutella and muesli,” Sharath had posted.
In the same year, the Indian contingent at the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Buenos Aires had complained about the meals at the Village. Similar food issues had cropped up during Beijing (2008), London (2012) and Rio (2016).
In Tokyo, much to the delight of the Indian contingent, the organisers have brought the taste of North Indian food to their table at the Village’s dining hall.
On the menu are chole bhature, butter and plain naan (stuffed breads), paratha, butter chicken, tofu (soy paneer), tomato and shahi paneer (cottage cheese), bhindi, lentil curry, basmati and jasmine rice, biryani, steamed spinach and steamed sweet potatoes. All food items have their nutritional value (energy, protein, fat, carbohydrate, sodium and salt equivalent) indicated in front of the spread.
India’s deputy chef-de-mission, Dr Prem Verma, told TOI from Tokyo that the food quality has been excellent and the Games organisers have made a wonderful arrangement for the country’s athletes.
“There are so many varieties of food to relish. The athletes look happy,” he said. During the Beijing Olympics, two-time Olympic medallist wrestler, Sushil Kumar, had carried ready-to-eat food and dry fruits with him to make up for the unavailability of Indian food.
The Tokyo organizing committee had confirmed to the IOA that Indian food would be provided to the athletes during the Games.
