Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, a six-time Olympic medallist, rose to prominence at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, becoming the first Caribbean woman to win gold in the 100m dash.
Fraser-Pryce cruised to victory in the 100m and 200m at the Jamaica Olympic trials and will head to Tokyo, her fourth Olympics, in blistering form in quest of her third Olympic gold medal.
Fraser-Pryce is in perhaps the best of forms. She won the final of the 100m Olympic trial in 10.71 seconds. She clocked a personal-best of 21.79 seconds to win the 200m and complete a sprint double at the Jamaica Olympic trials
The London Olympics was Fraser-Pryce’s best Olympics outing till date, as she not only retained her 100m title but also added two more medals – silver in the 200m and 4x100m relay respectively.
She also won a silver in the 4x100m relay and a bronze in the 100m at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
In 2013, Fraser-Pryce registered the three fastest 100m times and the two fastest in the 200m. She won six Diamond League races throughout the season (four in the 100m and two in the 200m) to clinch the Diamond League titles for both events.
Owing to her achievements on the track throughout the season, she was named the IAAF World Athlete of the Year in 2013. She was the second Jamaican woman to be given this honour after Merlene Ottey in 1990.
The 34-year-old Fraser-Pryce won her fourth world title in the 100m race in 2019, two years after having a son, Zyon. Earlier, she had won 100m world titles in 2009, 2013 and 2015.
The years 2010 and 2011 didn’t go down well for Fraser-Pryce, as she was handed a six-month suspension after her urine sample taken at the Shanghai Diamond League tested positive for oxycodone.
Later in 2011, Fraser-Pryce’s career was hampered by a calf injury that prevented her from competing at the Jamaican National Championships. Incredibly, the 2011 World Championship in Daegu remains Fraser-Pryce’s only appearance at the world event where she did not win 100m gold.
Usain Bolt has backed Fraser-Pryce to win her third Olympic 100m title at the Tokyo Games.
Watch out for Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce at the Tokyo Olympics.
