This Chrome Extension Tells You Who Paid $8 for Twitter Verification

Just a few days after Twitter launched its paid verification check system through Twitter Blue, users have already crafted some interesting ways to tell who paid for verification.

Yesterday, GitHub user William Seagar published Eight Dollars, a Chrome and Firefox extension that shows who paid for verification on Twitter. While clicking on a user’s verification badge currently shows how they were verified and if they paid, this extension goes the extra mile and makes this information visible without the extra click.

Other Twitter users have published similar extensions with a comedic twist, like Twitter Blue Nerd, which turns paid verification checks into verification badge-shaped nerd emojis:

Twitter’s verification system is facing some drastic changes this week — as of this morning, Twitter Blue is currently suspended after a wave of impersonators began using the feature to mimic brand accounts and spread false information. Earlier, Twitter had implemented a gray Official check mark to denote which users were verified without payment, but later removed this feature as new head Elon Musk called Twitter Blue “the great leveler.”

The verification system isn’t the only thing that’s changed since Elon Musk took over — Musk recently told employees that the company might face bankruptcy after firing the CEO and CFO and laying off thousands of employees.
