These dangerous iOS apps are still available in the App Store, says report – Times of India

Months after being discovered, several dangerous iOS apps are still lurking in Apple’s mobile app repository that can be downloaded by users. According to a report by TechRadar, a team of cybersecurity researchers at VPN Check has found that Apple has still not removed some of the dangerous apps that were discovered by Avast in March 2021. The antivirus company pointed out 133 fraudulent apps, however, VPN Check says that 84 of these apps are still available for download. The report also mentions that these apps include — photo and video editing apps, wallpaper apps, horoscope apps, phone cleaners, fake antivirus apps and other similar products.
What makes these apps dangerous
As per the report, all of these apps are not malware or viruses and might not “try to steal data, damage, or destroy the endpoint they’re infecting.” However, these apps try to dupe victims to pay extra money through — hidden fees, premium subscriptions or other similar mechanisms. Moreover, the report mentions that these apps are “relatively hard to eliminate from the devices,” and VPN Check has claimed that these apps are “scamming users out of at least $100 million every year.”
Why VPN Check is accusing Apple of these apps
Apart from that, VPN Check has also accused Apple of refusing ‘to act swiftly and remove the malicious apps” from the App Store. The researchers have also argued that the Cupertino-based tech giant “still gets its cut from the fraudulent earnings, and stands to lose an entire revenue stream if it moves swiftly,” the report claims.
The company has complained, “It might not be in Apple’s interest to address the issue. With the mobile phone market being saturated, the big bucks are increasingly earned in the App Store. And Scam apps are great clients. They make a lot of money through their scams, of which Apple gets its cut. Plus, the App Developers spend a lot of that money on running Ads on the App Store that Apple also gets to pocket. Not too shabby, as they like to say at Apple.” However, the report mentions that Apple has not commented on this issue yet.
