The Outlast Trials is a new direction for the Outlast series, taking what was a duo of traditional single-player first-person horror games and moving them in a co-op multiplayer direction.
Launched in early access two months ago, the game is very much co-op focused, but this may not always be the case. According to studio co-founder Philippe Morin, who sat down with our own Robert Zak, The Outlast Trials had elements of competition during its development cycle, and it’s something the team has “on their mind” for the future. “It’s funny how people always look for ways to compete with each other. During the second playtest, players were trying even though there was no structure for it. They were looking for ways to add a competition element between each other, and that’s something that’s on our minds.”
Game director Alex Charbonneau chimed in to say that the premise of The Outlast Trials is going to allow the team to experiment with various game modes. “We’re not opposed to, one day, like a programme that lasts for one week, where we test something that could be as wild as A 1V1V1.”
Frantically sprinting around the various hellscapes that Murkoff has created definitely brings people together, but what if that energy could be reversed to create tense stand-offs between players?
“We were really trying to nail the team dynamics you see in movies like Saw. You have to work together, but you can’t fully trust each other,” Morin said. “There’s still a bit of that in the game now, technically you could shut the door in some other player’s face so they have to deal with the enemy while you’re running away. You’re thinking ‘Well it’s between you and me. Fuck you. I’m running out of here.’”
I’ve played enough with Kyle Knight and the aforementioned Mr Zak to know that your supposed comrades would much rather, when it comes down to it, have you get hunted by a bloodthirsty 7-foot-tall maniac while they solve puzzles rather than the other way around.
So while Red Barrel hasn’t confirmed PvP in the future, they certainly seem to be flirting with the idea. There are a lot of ideas coming out of Red Barrel’s ideas factory for the game, and we can’t wait to see them come to life.
