The Last of Us Showrunner Says HBO Series ‘Should Be Around for a While’ Beyond Season 2

Craig Mazin, showrunner of HBO’s The Last of Us, has already said he and game creator Neil Druckmann plan for the series adaptation to run for more than just two seasons, and he continued to speak a bit more about that over the past weekend.

While at NAB Show in Las Vegas (via Deadline) on Sunday, Mazin teased that there’s still “quite a bit more story to tell” in The Last of Us.

“Our plan is to do it not just for one more season,” he added. “We should be around for a while.”

Mazin and Druckmann have previously confirmed that Season 2 will begin to cover the story of The Last of Us Part II. And while Season 1 went over the story of Part I within a single season, Mazin told IGN at the red carpet premiere of the HBO show that Part II is “more than a season’s worth of television.”

“It’s a big animal to take apart, you know?” he said at the time. “Because it’s a much bigger story and it’s a more complicated story. It’s a beautiful story.”

HBO officially renewed The Last of Us back in January, but the network itself has not announced any plans beyond Season 2.

And fans still have a little while to wait until Season 2 comes around. Star Bella Ramsey recently said in an appearance on the Jonathan Ross Show that the follow-up will likely shoot at the end of this year, meaning Season 2 will debut “probably at the end of 2024, early 2025.”
