The Flash Director Addresses Sequel Possibilities: ‘There is Excitement About Continuing the Story’

Andy Muschietti, the director behind the upcoming DC movie The Flash, isn’t sure if his movie will get a sequel or be a part of the new DC Universe, but he certainly isn’t ruling out the possibility.

The Flash, which is set to hit theaters on June 16, will see Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen travel back in time to save his parents. Things go awry, though, when The Flash tries to meddle with the past, causing chaos to break out. The film will also see Sasha Calle as Supergirl and Michael Keaton return as Batman. But will we ever be seeing a sequel to all of this?

During a Q&A after an advance press screening of The Flash, Muschietti said, “We didn’t talk about it. I think that we are waiting to see how this movie does. Of course, there is excitement about continuing the story, especially if this movie is successful. Of course, there is an architecture at DC that is brewing and being created, and the question is will this new architecture absorb this story.”

The Flash will be Miller’s first standalone movie as the character, but it very well could be their last. James Gunn and Peter Safran took over as co-CEOs of DC Studios in late 2022, and the duo unveiled a grand plan for the IP that includes a whole new slate of films and shows. Chapter 1 of this new universe, named Gods and Monsters, will recast and reintroduce some of our favorite DC characters.

Therefore, the future for character-driven sequels to things like The Flash is up-in-the-air at best. During his video detailing the roadmap for DC’s upcoming film slate, Gunn said that The Flash movie helps lead into his upcoming plans because it “resets the DC Universe,” although there was no mention of The Flash 2 beyond that.

“The good thing about the multiverse is that it is possible,” Muschietti said. “The multiverse allows all of these different worlds to coexist and to interact. So hopefully, yes. We don’t know yet.”

It’s also necessary to mention Miller’s numerous alleged crimes, including accusations of grooming minors, throwing a chair at a woman, felony burglary, a disappearance, and legal issues across multiple states. Gunn has previously been tight-lipped abour Miller’s future in DC, saying “Let’s see what happens.”

Nevertheless, DC’s current state seems to constantly be in flux, and it can be hard to tell what stories are going to be a part of the future under Gunn and Safran. When asked if The Flash was a part of the plans for the new DC, Muschietti responded: “Certainly hope so, yeah.”

“Again, we can’t predict the future,” he continued. “Everything that we hear is going to happen is very exciting. We don’t know much more than you do, honestly. But again, this is a movie about beginninngs, not endings. I certainly hope so, yeah.”

Despite the director’s uncertainty about a potential sequel, THR reported that a script for The Flash 2 has already been written just in case the first installment proves sucessful.
