The Facebook Gaming App Will Be Shut Down In October

From the 28th of October, the Facebook Gaming App will cease to exist on both iOS and Android devices, the company has confirmed.

Although Facebook Gaming will continue to operate, the mobile app will no longer be accessible from the aforementioned date. A statement from the Facebook Gaming team explains that after this date, the app will no longer work, but users can download their gaming app search data prior to the shutdown.

The team goes on to say, “we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to all of you for everything you’ve done to build a thriving community for gamers and fans since this app first launched. This was truly a community-led effort to bring new gaming features to Facebook”.

The team did not explain exactly why the app is being shut down, but many believe that Facebook is struggling to compete in the gaming scene with the likes of YouTube and Twitch. The statement continues by saying, “despite the news, our mission to connect players, fans and creators with the games they love hasn’t changed, and you’ll still be able to find your games, streamers and groups when you visit Gaming in the Facebook app.”

With the likes of YouTube and Twitch offering streamers lucrative deals to stream exclusively on their respective platforms, it’s no surprise that Facebook Gaming is struggling to compete. However, unlike Twitch and YouTube, Facebook Gaming also allows players to play some more basic games straight from the app. You won’t be able to access triple-a titles like Grand Theft Auto V, but if you’ve got a Facebook account you will be able to play titles such as Words With Friends, Uno, and more.

The platforms services will still remain the same from October 28th, but the mobile app will no longer be available to use on iOS and Android devices.
