Bandai Namco and Supermassive Games announced that The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan is now available on Nintendo Switch.
The most interesting aspect of this Switch port is that its Nintendo eShop page specifically states that the game runs at 24fps. Most games usually run at 30fps or 60fps, so having Man of Medan on Switch running at 24fps is unusual. This port also retains the same features found on other platforms, such as the Curator’s Cut game mode, two-player online and five-player couch co-op multiplayer modes, and accessibility options such as subtitle and difficulty settings.
One new feature that this version has is an extended playable chapter called Flooded, which introduces new character deaths during the game’s ending.
While the frame rate is odd, at least it’s a native port of the game, and not a cloud version like so many other AAA Switch ports are, such as Control and Kingdom Hearts 3. Back in 2014, The Order 1886 developer Ready at Dawn said that the studio aimed for a cinematic and film-like approach to the game. However, it opted for 30fps, rather than the 24fps frame rate of movies, saying the game “does not feel good to play” at 24fps.
The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan was first released in August 2019 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions were released in September 2022.
In GameSpot’s Man of Medan review, we said, “If you’ve played Until Dawn, you’ll know what to expect. But despite a smart online co-op mode, Man of Medan’s weak narrative ultimately makes it a disappointing first installment.”
GameSpot has reached out for comment to find out more regarding the decision to target 24fps.
