Teachers hope for a better outcome with Math textbooks in Marathi – Times of India

Maharashtra government’s School Education and Sports department initiative to introduce math content in the Marathi language is well-aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP).

The school curriculum in the state, till now had Marathi as a language subject. Other subjects such as History, Science and Geography will have coursebooks be in English.

The initiative is set to change the teaching dynamics in schools. By introducing Math textbooks in Marathi, the government aims to make the foundation strong.

“Majority of local residents of Maharashtra are Marathi, this prioritises the need of textbook content in our language. However, students are free to opt for Marathi or English or both the modes of teaching depending on the school’s facility,’’ said Shashikant Deu Utekar, assistant teacher at Maratha High School, Worli, Mumbai.

The school has two sections, where students are segregated based on the medium of instruction chosen by them.

Mumbai has approximately 3000 schools, of which 1000 schools are Marathi medium. These schools are further divided into two sections for students opting for blended or pure Marathi medium classrooms. In approximately 200 schools, located in the rural areas of the state, students prefer studying in their mother tongue. This initiative is will be a learning boon to such students, says Utekar.

This initiative will help students from a rural background, with limited knowledge of English.

Sindhu Sarjerao Patil, Principal, (primary section) Prabhadevi Municipal School, said, “The regional language textbooks will make the pedagogy process easier. Several kids enrolled at the school belong to a disadvantaged group and instructions in Marathi will help them.”

Surveys conducted by the state government revealed that several students struggle with Math due to language constraints. Although parents want their wards to speak and write in English, learning Math in a regional language may go a long way.

The teachers are not sure whether the basic mathematics number concept will be changed to the Marathi numbering system or remain unchanged.

Another English teacher, working in NGO sector in Mumbai says that Marathi Math books will help underprivileged students as most of them struggle with the English language. “Math concepts can be better understood in the regional language. This will help them enjoy the subject,” she says.

The biggest challenge will be to get the teachers equipped to teach Math in Marathi. In most schools, teachers are trained to teach the subject in English, she adds.

“Teachers with subject expertise as well as child-friendly way of teaching, especially when dealing with those from economically backward class and scheduled tribe, count the most important. Knowing the basics of creating a healthy learning environment and maximising the learning of such students, is one of the founding training key pillars. Their hard work will do the magic for increasing the learning outcome” she added.
