Tamil Nadu: Many hospitalised Covid-19 patients need oxygen or ICU – ET HealthWorld

Tamil Nadu: Many hospitalised Covid-19 patients need oxygen or ICUCHENNAI: Less than 5% of Covid-19 patients require hospitalisation, but among those hospitalised, more than a half require oxygen or intensive care therapy, data from the public health registry shows.

On Monday, the state reported 5,104 new Covid-19 cases when all districts, barring Dindigul and Kallakurichi, reported a drop in new cases.

“Cases are steadily coming down across all districts, but so is covid appropriate behavior,” said health secretary J Radhakrishnan. “Many people neither wear masks nor maintain social distancing. Buses are overcrowded and many people don’t wear a mask. This is worrying because the war against Covid-19 is still not over,” he said.
Fewer Covid patients require hospitalisation now compared to the second wave. At the peak of the second wave on May 21, 2021, nearly 26% of the 2.74 lakh patients required hospitalisation. Among 70,311 people in hospital, 56% occupied hospital beds, and 13% required ICU admissions. Meanwhile, on Monday morning, only 4.9% of the 1.21 lakh covid patients were admitted to the hospitals. Yet, among those hospitalised 43% were in oxygen beds and nearly 804 out of the 5,975 patients (13%) were in the ICU.

By evening, 773 of the 5,059 Covid patients in hospitals required ICU admissions. “We are seeing an average of 30 deaths a day. Most people in the ICU and among the dead are elderly and people with comorbid conditions. Most of them are either unvaccinated or have not taken both doses,” said director of medical education Dr. R Narayanababu. Most people requiring ICU admissions carry the Delta variant, which affects the lungs.
The health department reported 13 deaths on Monday, with 8 in Chennai.

On Monday, the health department reported 13 deaths compared to 26 reported on Sunday. Eight of the 13 deaths were from Chennai.

Meanwhile, fresh cases were the highest in Chennai (839) and Coimbatore (807). All other districts reported fewer than 500 cases each. Tamil Nadu: Many hospitalised Covid-19 patients need oxygen or ICU
