Suzume Crosses Rs. 10 Crores at Indian Box Office

Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume has surpassed Rs. 10 crores (≈$1.2 million) at the Indian box office. The film was released in India on April 21, 2023, and was distributed in the country by PVR Inox Pictures. It is now the top-grossing Japanese film in India. The film was expected to reach this number in the country.

Mr. Koji Sato, director general of Japan Foundation New Delhi, expressed his delight, stating, “We are very happy to hear that many Indian people enjoyed the beautiful masterpiece Suzume.”

Kamal Gianchandani, CEO of PVR Inox Pictures, shared his excitement, saying, “We at PVRINOX Pictures are thrilled to introduce the fascinating world of anime to our enthusiastic movie buffs. Indian otakus have warmly embraced the distinct storytelling methods, vibrant animation, and cultural intricacies portrayed in anime, leading to a greater appreciation and understanding of Japanese culture. We eagerly anticipate showcasing more exemplary works in the future.”

Suzume was one of the most anticipated anime films to be released in India this year, as director Shinkai has a big fan following in the country. After his hit 2016 film Your Name, there was a demand for his 2019 film Weathering With You to be released in the country. Fans created a petition for the film to be released here, which got over 50,000 signatures. This got the attention of Shinkai himself, who helped the film release in India and visited the country for the screenings as well.

Suzume got early fan screenings as well, and a premiere before the official release, which was attended by Shinkai himself. The Makoto Shinkai Film Festival also took place in India, where several of his films were screened in various cities.

In IGN’s 9/10 review of Suzume, we called it “one of the most captivating animated films released this year.”

The Indian anime market has grown rapidly in recent years, with popular films such as Jujutsu Kaisen 0 and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – To the Swordsmith Village being released in theaters. This trend is likely to continue as anime fans in India get content faster and more officially accessible.
