If you’re a Superman fanatic, you would know that Superman’s powers are affected by variable factors, and not just sunlight, as opposed to the general notion. A new Superman comic, Lost #2, which was released on April 11, further explains these variables, and gravities effect on Superman’s powers to be more specific.
Gravity induces biochemical reactions in Kryptonians
Superman: Lost #2 has our Man of Steel adjusting to the environment of Earth after being stranded in space for 20 long years. He was eventually rescued by a group of travellers, who were astonished to find that Clark Kent could survive a singularity for such a long time. It is here that Clark explains Kryptonians “expresses significant biochemical reactions to gravity.” It is these reactions that, in combination with the effects of solar radiation, produce a “range of unique abilities.”
This implies that while solar radiation is a factor, it is not the primary source of Superman’s powers — gravity’s effect on his body is. Sunlight can be considered to be more of an activator of his already inherent powers.
The question we are now posed with after this elucidation is how exactly does gravity affect the powers of our Man of Steel. Does a stronger gravitational pull than that of Earth make Superman weaker, or is it the other way round? Or is it a net result of all the variable factors affecting him? For more clarity, we will have to wait and see how DC plans to deal with Superman’s powers in the future.
