The CW has renewed Superman & Lois for a fourth season while also announcing the cancellation of Gotham Knights after one season.
According to Variety, The CW has made some final decisions regarding its planned programming for the 2023-2024 TV season. Superman & Lois will reportedly return with a shorter 10-episode season, while Gotham Knights will not make it beyond its first season.
“We are thrilled to bring ‘All American: Homecoming’ and ‘Superman & Lois’ back,” Brad Schwartz, president of entertainment at The CW, said in a statement Monday evening. “These series are two of our strongest performers across our linear and digital platforms with some of the most passionate fanbases in all of television. We are grateful to our partners at Warner Bros. Television and Berlanti Productions for their continued collaboration, and we cannot wait to get started on the new seasons.”
The news of Gotham Knights’ cancellation arrives two weeks ahead of its finale, with the series set to draw a close on June 27. It aligns with The CW’s plans for a programming makeover, including a rollback of its superhero shows as they have apparently “had their time.”
IGN’s review of Gotham Knights said the show served as “a painful reminder that the golden age of DC shows on The CW is well and truly finished.” Yet Superman & Lois has always been a weird outlier and was the second most-watched show on The CW in 2022-23.
