Student Speak: Collaboration and networking are critical to learn new methods – Times of India

Parvathy Geetha, 35, from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, chose the UK for higher education as the city offers exposure to emerging businesses. “London also brings in professionals from all across the globe offering a wide scope to network. Collaboration and networking are critical to learning innovation in businesses,” says Parvathy who is in the second year of her part-time MBA at Alliance Manchester Business School.

Parvathy is currently working as a senior business analyst with an IT firm in London for the past six years. “Before moving to London, I was working in India at Technopark, Kerala, after finishing my BE in Electronics Engineering from Anna University,” says Parvathy. Born and brought up in a middle-class family, she finished her primary and secondary school education in Kerala.

The Global MBA helped Parvathy to apply the theoretical knowledge acquired through various case studies in real-life work scenarios. “It also helps me in decision-making, which is key in my workstream. Some of the things such as strategy, competition and game theory learning from MBA have changed the way I perceive a situation and the way I approach problems now,” explains Parvathy.

Course content

The Global MBA covers every aspect of management including leading a diverse team effectively, operations and marketing, simulation projects which mirror activities of running a company, business accounting and finance etc. She has chosen Fintech and Digital Marketing as her electives.

Mentoring and guidance

“I have regular catchups with my manager at work and discuss themes I am learning in MBA. A few of my course assignments are based on my real-life work,” she says, adding that she is often encouraged to apply the learnings for work improvements.

Industry exposure and hands-on learning

Hands-on learning, especially on simulation projects, was extremely useful. “I have not yet started the final project which will again bring in some goodness of hands-on learning,” says the Kerala girl, who tends to apply her learning at her workplace to solve real-life problems.

Admission process

To apply for the programme, candidates need to complete the Global MBA programme application form, take an admission test and submit supporting documents. “As part of the admission process, many factors, including education, career progression, leadership and entrepreneurial qualities of students are assessed by the B-school,” says Parvathy.

“During the MBA admission process, the school will review all aspects of an application equally (including the application form, essays, references, CV, degree, professional qualifications, admission test score, English level and interview). The MBA admissions committee will assess each element against the eligibility criteria and make a final decision,” she adds.
