Star Trek: Prodigy Isn’t Getting a Second Season, Will Be Removed From Paramount+

Paramount+ has canceled the previously confirmed second season of Star Trek: Prodigy and plans to remove the animated series from its platform, IGN confirmed with a Paramount+ spokesperson. The streamer also axed Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, Queen of the Universe, and The Game ahead of its upcoming influx of Showtime content.

A Paramount spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter, “As we prepare to combine Paramount+ and Showtime later this month in the U.S., we are refining our content offering to deliver the best streaming experience for subscribers. This is consistent with our content strategy since launch and across our business, which ensures we make smart, efficient choices, informed by audience data and insights. We are removing select programming as we look to optimize Showtime’s robust slate of premium originals.”

Star Trek: Prodigy’s cancellation means a frustrating renewal reversal for fans of the kid-friendly offering. The series showcased the return of Kate Mulgrew’s fan-favorite Captain Janeway, who hadn’t appeared onscreen in any form since Star Trek: Voyager. In Star Trek: Prodigy, Janeway recurs as a training hologram for the new cast.

IGN’s own Tara Bennett came away from the premiere with a positive take, writing that it has “all the ingredients for a lively, kid-friendly space adventure.”

The removals follow a larger trend of companies removing under-performing series for tax write-offs, with shows being removed from Max, Disney+, and of course Paramount+ over the past year.

Star Trek: Prodigy kicked off its first ten episodes on Paramount+ on October 28, 2021 with an extended premiere before wrapping up the season with a second ten-episode batch which aired from October to December 2022.

Paramount+ will begin moving Showtime content onto its platform next Tuesday. Star Trek: Prodigy, Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, and the other canceled shows will leave the streamer that day as well.
